About Dr. Jack R. Rollwagen
Dr. Jack R. Rollwagen was a cultural anthropologist whose specialties were world system analysis, world poverty and economic underdevelopment, and visual anthropology. Jack
received his PhD in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Oregon at Eugene. He taught at the State University of New York at Brockport as a full professor for many years until his retirement in 2006. Dr. Rollwagen was also a Fulbright Teaching Fellow at Shandong University in Shandong Province, China, in 1998-1999. Jack continued to live and work in
Brockport after retiring from teaching, and along with his wife Dr. Louise K. Stein,
who was a physical anthropologist, travelled the world for adventure and research.
Jack passed away in the summer of 2021 after a brief illness.
Dr. Jack R. Rollwagen's Work
Dr. Rollwagen founded the journal, Urban Anthropology, in 1972 (later changing the name to, Urban Anthropology and Studies of Cultural Systems and World Economic Development, in 1982). Jack was the journal’s editor and publisher for almost fifty years.
Dr. Rollwagen edited two books on anthropological filmmaking: Anthropological Filmmaking (1988), Anthropological Film and Video in the 1990’s (1993).
Dr. Rollwagen produced two series of anthropological films: Life In An American Village (2008), Song Of The Grasslands (2011).
